November is here, and with the warmer weather and longer days, many of our members are heading into one of their busiest times of the year.

This month's newsletter brings together a mix of important employment updates, insights into leadership and workplace culture, and a few good stories about the people who make our workplaces and communities what they are.

We also look at a significant Employment Court decision on offshore recruitment fees, upcoming changes to leave legislation, and some encouraging news from New Zealand's food and fibre sector.

This month we look at the lessons we could learn from Australia’s modern slavery legislation, workplace stress and the importance of keeping statutory leave entitlements separate from additional benefits.

There are also some positive stories, including growing confidence in horticulture and how RSE work is helping build businesses back home. Mike’s blog considers the role the exchange rate is playing in current export returns, and what businesses should be planning for if it turns.

Spring is officially here, bringing longer days and, for many of you, the beginning of another busy season. This month, we are especially proud to celebrate NZEE member and partner Hortus, who were named RSE Employer of the Year at this year’s RSE Conference. It is wonderful to see their commitment to their RSE whānau recognised in this way. September also brings Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, beginning on 14 September. This year’s Te Reo Towns theme encourages communities and workplaces to make reo Māori visible, valued and part of everyday life.

This month, Mike reflects on the findings of the Davison KC review into the tragic Mauao landslide and the lessons for boards and committees of all sizes. In this month’s blog, NZEE Chair Mike Chapman looks at how the low New Zealand dollar is boosting export returns and what a stronger dollar would mean for margins, investment and costs before the exchange rate turns.
